The maritime sector is the backbone of global trade.  However, maritime trade is fueled by petroleum fossil fuels. The sector consumes an estimated 330 million metric tons of petroleum fuel each year, which emits approximately one billion metric tons of greenhouse gases (GHG) annually,  about 3% of annual global emissions. Fortunately, the sector can reduce its GHG emissions by using different energy sources and fuel-saving technologies such as zero-emission fuels, supplemental wind propulsion, or shifting to all-electric.
